Up until the 1950s, red and dry white wines were to be found in the more northerly part and above all the sweet white wines, the GRAVES SUPERIEURES, around Sauternes. Since then, the area planted with red grape varieties has been extended to represent more than half of the GRAVES appellation area : GRAVES SUPERIEURES now only make up 10 % of the production.
The GRAVES appellation covers more than 3,600 hectares. The area planted with red grapes varieties which has been extended constantly since the fifties, now represent almost 2/3 of the GRAVES appellation area. Today 380 wine producers work with passion and rigour to ensure the continued production of red and white wines worthy of their reputation.
